Mad Dogs on the Road 

With the cast (John Simm, Philip Glenister, Marc Warren and MaxBeesley) about to fly out to South Africa on 20th Janaury to begin filming Series 3, we rejoin the Mad Dogs just moments after the final scene of Series 1, when you’ll recall that Quinn had shot dead the crooked female detective to prevent her from shooting Baxter…. we left Baxter, Woody and Rick sitting silently in their hire car, and we were all wondering ‘Will they go back for Quinn?’   Because he had told them to go,  electing to stay and face whatever came next….

Well, of course they do go back for Quinn… and Baxter decides to put some of the drug money in the boot of their car. The usual Mad Dogs chaos ensues…  

Sky1 has commissioned a second series of John Simm and Philip Glenister drama Mad Dogs.

Simm, Glenister, Max Beesley and Marc Warren will all return for the second run and have also signed up for a potential third series. Filming for the four-parter will start this summer in Majorca and the show will air in early 2012.

The first outing for the dark thriller was a ratings hit for Sky1 in February and picked up a BAFTA nomination for ‘Drama Serial’.

Characters Woody (Beesley), Baxter (Simm) and Rick (Warren) will kick off the second series where they ended the first, returning to aid their friend Quinn (Glenister) in Majorca. However, the guys soon regret their decision as they end up involved in another murder and drug money incident.

Exec producer Andy Harries said: “Mad Dogs had such an impact that it was as obvious as a dead goat that we had to do more and all the our amazing cast felt the same.”

Fellow exec Suzanne Mackie added: “Before we had finished the first series of Mad Dogs we felt that there was so much more to do with these characters. I have been working with Cris Cole on the scripts ever since we finished shooting series one and the ideas for series two and three are every bit as explosive and inventive as they were at the beginning.”

Sky1′s directer of programmes Stuart Murphy said: “Customers loved this show so it’s great to commit to more. At Sky we work hard to bring our viewers high quality original entertainment made by the very best production companies with fantastic talent so I’m delighted we can confirm Mad Dogs’ return just a few weeks after the first series has finished its run. This also marks a growing investment in British scripted content, to sit alongside our great American shows.”

Life On Mars star John Simm has revealed how he was so badly hit by stage fright last year that he thought he was going to have a heart attack.

Actor John, 40, said the ordeal almost put him off taking on his new role as burnt-out journalist Tom Ronstadt in BBC1 drama Exile, which started last night.

John said nerves got to him as he played Hamlet in Sheffield. He added: “The pressure backstage on the press night was ridiculous. I just thought, ‘I’m going to have a heart attack’.”

“I was absolutely adamant I wasn’t going to do anything else. Then this arrived and it was so good I’d have been an idiot to say no, because someone else would have done it. And I’d have spent a long time regretting it.”

Exile (part 1) screencaptures will hopefully be added tonight!

John Simm has bemoaned the fact that his wife and son watch “bloody” reality television programmes.

Speaking to the Radio Times, the Exile star revealed that he and his son Ryan, however, have found a shared enjoyment in watching Laurel and Hardy together.

“My dad would go red in the face and fall off his chair, crying with laughter at Laurel and Hardy,” he told the magazine. “I laugh at it, too – not like that, I don’t laugh like that in general! And my son laughs at it. That’s unbelievable – three generations, and how old are those films? It’s like it’s from a time capsule. It’s mad. I’m so, so glad that my son likes Laurel and Hardy.”

Yet he admitted: “He won’t watch them in black and white. It’s the colourised ones for him, which is hard for me. But at least he’s watching them. His generation don’t get things that aren’t in colour.”

Simm concluded that his absences due to work mean that he cannot always control his son’s viewing habits, saying: “He watches those bloody reality shows with his mum, which I’m not happy about. The ballroom thing and the popstar talent s**t things. Which, I’m a bit p*ssed off about.”

Simm will appear alongside Jim Broadbent in psychological thriller Exile on BBC One at 9pm from next Sunday, May 1.

Mad Dogs star John Simm is shown hitting his WIFE in the face in a new drama.

His actress missus Kate Magowan landed the part of his lover – who gets thumped in the opening scenes of thriller Exile.

John, 40, plays womanising, cocaine-snorting lads’ mag journalist Tom Ronstadt, who is having an affair with his editor’s wife.

The actor admits the scene where he acted out attacking her was “difficult” to film.

Speaking of his character, he said: “Tom immediately regrets it. It’s a terrible thing to do.”

John also has violent scenes with his screen father (Jim Broadbent) in the three-part tale by Shameless creator Paul Abbott.

It opens with him returning to his northern home town from London to find out the truth behind his father beating him up.

John said: “I grew up in a town near where we filmed. It was quite a similar situation. I left when I was 16.

“I’ve had difficult relationships with my father. The returning, being uncomfortable – I can relate to that.”

John starred in Sky1 drama Mad Dogs earlier this year.

Exile will be screened on BBC1 at the end of April.

Exile is a new drama series for BBC One. Created by Paul Abbott and written by Danny Brocklehurst, this three part drama is a psychological thriller that tells an intimate story of prodigal redemption.

John Simm plays Tom Ronstadt, a successful London journalist whose world has fallen apart and it’s all his own doing. With his career and life in ruins he decides to return to his hometown in Lancashire for the first time in 18 years. He finds his father Sam (Jim Broadbent), who Tom idolised as a child, in the grip of Alzheimer’s – a once formidable man now being cared for by his younger sister Nancy (Olivia Coleman).

Over the three episodes Tom unravels the mystery linked to his childhood that drove him away all those years ago. In trying to extract information and encouraging him to remember the past, Tom becomes increasingly frustrated with his father’s failure to remember. He persists unaware that he is unearthing a devastating crime that will reveal secrets he could never have imagined.

Shaun Dooley, Timothy West and Claire Goose will also star.
